30th Anniversary Story: Summer Perkins

Read Summer’s story and see how her Franklin Planner helped change her education and future.

In nineteen-eighty-never-mind, I was an eighth grader with ADHD. Summer Perkins

I was nearly failing out of school when my dad bought me monarch-sized Franklin Planner pages for my Trapper Keeper, and an audiotape of the workshop. Learning to identify my values, set goals, and plan my priorities not only got me through high school on time, but also helped me manage my attention problems at work and in college.

Today, with so many things competing for my attention, I use my planner as a way to decide what I’m NOT going to do, and “First Things First” is a mantra that keeps the daily minutiae from overwhelming my real priorities.

  1. The company I used to work for encouraged its employees to use Franklin Planners. They first hosted a training session on being organized with Franklin Covey and then ordered Franklin Planners for any employee interested in following your system. As a result, I used my Franklin Planner for a few years and then stopped.

Recently I found the last one that I used from 2003. At this point in time, my life is not even remotely close to where I imagined it would be.

With resolve and determination, I ordered a new Franklin Planner refill, which just arrived. As a result, I am very excited to begin using your system again. I cannot wait to begin being organized and to begin identifying my life purpose(s) so that I can get my life on track and rise above where I am now.

I was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago, which explains some of my life distractions. In addition, I have a son who was diagnosed with ADHD and some special needs when he was very young. Because of this, my husband has written both of us off as hopeless, which is not very encouraging or motivating in any way, shape, or form.

Equipped now with my new resolve and my new Franklin Planner, I am confident that I am in a better position to move ahead in a positive way with my own life and to support and encourage my son on his life journey. Because my son has struggled in school his whole life, and is now continuing to struggle, I am contemplating ordering a Franklin Planner for him.

Rather than succumbing to a life of mediocrity and guilt for what has not been, I am prayerful that being a positive example to him, the two of us can and will be victorious over where we are and where we will go from here. What have I got to lose? I will keep you posted.

  2. In 2011 I started back to school after being out of school for over 30 years. Needless to say 23 years before I didn\’t have any idea I would be back in school at 49 years old. Going back to school for me was very difficult keeping up with assignments, tests, club meetings, and study group meetings phone numbers of classmates so I pulled out my old faithful planner and got a refill boy what a difference no missed assignments etc. everything in one place my school check lists and my personal check list. Now after using it for going on 3 semesters I have made A/B (Dean\’s List) which I wouldn\’t have been able to do without my Franklin planner.
Thanks Franklin planner for keeping my life more organized
