As the holiday season approaches, so do countless invitations, requests, and opportunities to give our time and energy. It’s easy to get swept up in the “holiday spirit” and feel like saying no simply isn’t an option. But let’s face it, we don’t magically get more than 24 hours in a day just because it’s December. In fact, with so much going on, it can feel like we have even less time. Many of us say yes out of a desire to avoid confrontation, please others, or avoid missing out. But constantly saying yes can drain us in the long run. When we start to say no more often, we build a habit of mindful decision-making that serves us well beyond the holiday season. This habit gives us the freedom to make choices that are aligned with our goals and values, rather than simply reacting to external demands. To make the most of the season without burning out, it’s essential to learn the power of saying no and protecting your time and energy.

Know What Matters Most

Start by clarifying what this time of year truly means to you. What are the experiences and traditions that bring you joy, energy, and connection? By identifying what’s most meaningful, you can make intentional decisions about how to spend your time and who to spend it with. When you’re clear on your priorities, it becomes easier to say no to anything that doesn’t align with them.

Delegate Wisely

Saying no doesn’t mean abandoning all responsibilities; it simply means finding smart ways to manage them. Delegation can be a powerful tool for protecting your time. This doesn’t mean offloading tasks you dislike onto others, but rather finding practical solutions that free up your schedule. For example, instead of baking that homemade pie, consider picking one up from the store. Or, if a friend is running errands, ask them to grab something for you in exchange for cash or a favor later. By delegating thoughtfully, you save time without sacrificing the holiday experience.

Just Say No – Politely

Sometimes, the simplest way to protect your time is by saying no outright. Politely declining an invitation or request is entirely valid, especially if it doesn’t align with your priorities. If the idea of a blunt “no” makes you uncomfortable, try softening it with alternatives like, “That’s not a good time for us” or “We won’t be able to make it this year.” You could also try the “sandwich method”, sandwiching your no between two positive statements. For example: “Thank you so much for inviting me! I really appreciate the thoughtfulness, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it. I’d still love to catch up soon – let’s find a time to get together!” Remember, you don’t need to offer lengthy explanations. A straightforward, polite response is enough.

This holiday season, remember that saying no is an act of self-respect and intention. Saying yes to everything might seem easier in the moment, but it often leads to overwhelm and prevents us from fully enjoying what truly matters. Each “yes” should serve a purpose, allowing us to make a difference, connect meaningfully, or positively impact our lives. On the other hand, a considered “no” protects our energy, time, and resources, ensuring we have the space to focus on what’s important. Embrace it, and use it as a way to create space for the people and experiences that bring you true joy. By setting boundaries, you’ll create a holiday season filled with what you value most.
