Practice Law 6- Your Behavior is a Reflection of What You Truly Believe

In our journey towards effective time and life management, understanding the connection between our beliefs and our behavior is paramount. Hyrum W. Smith’s book, ‘The 10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management,’ introduces Law 6, which delves into the Franklin Reality Model—a powerful tool that sheds light on why we behave the way we do.

First Element: Needs

At the heart of the Reality Model lies the concept of needs. We all have four basic psychological needs: the need to live, to love and be loved, to feel important, and to experience variety. Much of our behavior stems from our attempts to satisfy these fundamental needs, albeit sometimes unsuccessfully.

Second Element: The Belief Window

The Belief Window is the next crucial element of the model. It represents our beliefs about the world, ourselves, and others. These beliefs influence our behavior, shaping the way we interpret and respond to the world around us. Whether our beliefs accurately reflect reality or not, we act as if they are true, often without questioning their validity.

Third Element: Rules

Rules are the subconscious guidelines we create based on our beliefs. These “if-then” statements dictate our behavior, allowing us to act automatically in various situations. As a result, behavior patterns emerge, reflecting the interplay between our beliefs, rules, and needs.

Fourth Element: Behavior Patterns

This is where something physically happens. Consequently, this is the point at which the workings of the model start to become visible.

Fifth Element: Results and Feedback

The final element of the model is Results and Feedback, which provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of our beliefs and behavior. If our behavior successfully meets our needs, it reinforces the validity of our beliefs. However, if our needs remain unmet, it prompts us to reevaluate our beliefs and adjust our behavior accordingly.

The Reality Model serves two primary functions: providing a visual representation of our beliefs and behavior, and helping us evaluate and refine our beliefs before they manifest in our behavior. By understanding the underlying beliefs driving our behavior, we can gain greater control over our lives and align our actions with our values and goals.

To harness the full potential of the Reality Model, we must remain open to new information and actively seek to expand our understanding of the world. By continually updating our belief windows with more accurate and empowering beliefs, we can navigate life’s challenges with confidence and purpose.
